Today I began painting a watercolor portrait painting of my sister, and for the first time ever I have time-lapse documentation of the process. Jeff set up a camera on a tripod to the left of the painting and taped me as I worked on Emily/Poof's face in three 25-minute segments. The camera's batteries died after the first segment, so I took a break from her face to paint her neck, chest, and shirt. What you see above is ten times faster than my normal speed. Fascinated as I watched my sped-up painting for the first time, I said, "It makes me look better than I actually am!"
Apologies for the sideways-iness. It couldn't be avoided given my table space and the light. You're able to see more here without my hand in the way. The video starts out a little blurry but tightens up at the 1:45 mark. I listened to "This American Life" while painting today, so to spare you from having to listen to seven minutes of chipmunks, Jeff made the video silent.
I've only started to paint her skin tones--what you see on her face and chest is just underpainting. For the most part I concentrated on darkening her eyes, nose, and mouth, so those features really pop against her much-too-light skin. And what is blowing my mind right now is how much this makes her look like me, her pasty-white sister. Her face is about 1/40th of the whole painting, which will include her massive makeup collection.
That was so much fun to watch! Oh, and you are good Kelly!!!

I watched this an unhealthy number of times. I blame Bob Ross.

Absolutely astonishing. More!

I can't begin to tell you how amazing this is to watch. Any high school art student would be amazed at watching you paint this face, because, as you said in a previous blog, if you screw up the face, what is the point of doing the rest?
You astound me with your talent. I loved doing watercolours in art class way back in the day of high school (I think we both are the same age) and back then, it was so hard to do...but I still have some of my pieces.
You share in ways that you can't imagine....thank you.

Kelly, you are, without a doubt, crazy talented. Thank you so much for sharing the video!
