Mabel is done, waiting for her frame to arrive, and getting ready for her big debut on Tuesday! The reason I've been pushing myself to finish this painting so quickly is because last week the people at Indi Go artist co-op in downtown Champaign asked me if I'd like to be part of a three-woman show starting June 29! The opening reception is on July 8 from 6-9pm and will run until July 15. So I'll be showing Mabel along with the rest of my realistic watercolors in a truly cool space. I'm so excited that I'm going to try to crank out three more smaller paintings before the show goes up. Can I do it? I guess we'll see! Today I was also very happy to learn that Mabel and her lovely parents, who live in the Chicago area, are planning to come to the show (and see the painting for the first time)! If you're in the area, please stop by and see me. If you give me some notice, I'll probably make my cheeseball for you!
Below: this is the painting as of a couple of days ago. I tell you, I keep looking at that Scrabble box to confirm that I did not misspell "Scrabble." It somehow does not look right to me, but I know it is! As I mentioned earlier, the books were fun to paint because children's books tend to be aggressively colorful, so I was able to play with hot pinks, turquoise blues, and vivid yellows. Click on either picture to see larger version.
Thanks as always to Mabel's parents for allowing me to paint their child. I haven't even met her, but in that weird artist-subject psychic link way, I feel like I kind of know this darling little girl.
This is incredible. I wish I knew you in person I'd have to get you working on some of these amazing paintings for me!

I know why the Scrabble box looks "wrong" to you. It's because at first glance, it reads "SCRABBIE"!!
HOWEVER, this is breathtaking. You are such a talent and what a joy it is to see your work.
