Poof helped me ice a few pre-party sugar cookies yesterday, and she created this incredible green purse along with two others (see the end of this post). This photo captures Poof's special brand of justifiable smugness.
I have a pie stand that I like to trot out for parties. I placed about 1/3 of my sugar cookies, along with a few of those lemon ricotta cookies, on cheap 4th of July plates that I shamefully purchased at a certain evil superstore.
Last week Mom gave me some cookie cutters she wasn't using, so I am pleased to present the world premiere of the Wise Ass.
Also making an appearance yesterday were the Smart Ass and Zee Leetle French Donkey, a creation by Jeff.
Also new: rabbits, squirrels, watermelons, grapes, and freakin' AMERICA, which was difficult to bake mainly because of Florida, a troublesome state to be sure.
As far as state shapes go, I don't think it gets much better than Illinois. I've always thought my home state resembles Sarge from Beetle Bailey in profile, and as I painted a couple of Abraham Lincoln silhouettes on Illinois cookies, Jeff challenged me to do an Obama silhouette. I picked up that gauntlet and produced my very first Obama cookie. In retrospect, I wish I would have painted his hand in a Spock salute. I will do so next time, and there will be a next time.
Moving on: a dubious pig downwind of a happy pig.
I was glad to get some tiny cookie cutters because they're great for dealing with scraps. This little cat is roughly the size of a grape tomato.
Poof's other two purses: she described the purple purse as "tacky" and the orange purse as "preppy." I'd say the green one is "ladylike." I was particularly amazed by Poof's attempt to create a cheetah pattern by using cut-up gingerbread men and chocolate sprinkles on the purple purse.
Amazing. Just amazing. And you were so right about the John Hodgman clip!

I believe Mr. Obama is *one of us.* :D
Thanks, Melinda!

Kelly, these are amazing. You are a talented cook. Even though I've never tried your food, the presentation is outstanding.
